| Beatrix Potter wrote most of her stories in the Lake District which she first visited with her family on their annual holidays. |

Over the years they rented a number of houses over the summer months around Windermere and Derwent Water. |

The success of her books enabled her to buy a large amount of land in the Lakes, and one of the first properties acquired was Hill Top Farm. Hill Top, the hamlet of Near Sawry and Hawkshead are the idyllic settings for a number of her stories: |
